How to write a marketing plan

Helen Cox Marketing Consultant London Kent UKIt doesn’t matter the type of business you own or the industry you work in; if you want your firm to be a success, you will need to get your marketing right. Whilst you can try and market your business off the cuff, with little to no planning, the truth is that the best way to master marketing is to have a marketing plan.

Marketing plans may seem straightforward, but they can be tricky to put together, or at least to put together in a way that makes them worthwhile.

Think that you need some help on how to write a marketing plan that works? Here are my top tips on getting it right and maximising the impact that it has on your business.

Make sure you understand your audience

You absolutely cannot market appropriately if you do not understand and recognise who you are trying to sell to. This means that one of the best places to start when it comes to writing a marketing plan is thinking about your audience.

Once you identify your target market, then you can start to think about what they want/need and what they, in turn, are going to be searching for in a business. This can then help you work out your marketing plans and how best you will appeal to them.

Always have your goals in mind with your marketing plan

Before you begin to create your marketing plan, you need to make sure that you have your goals and objectives in mind. Once you have these set-out, you will think about how you will get there and what you need. Not only this, but when you have your chosen goals set out clearly, this will help you focus more and think about the future and what you want/need to achieve.

Take the time to research

A good marketing plan is not a quick fix; it takes time to think about and put together. One crucial stage of the entire process is researching what you need and how you currently stand in the market. If you can identify some of these critical factors, you will be able to use this information to formulate your marketing plans and ensure that they will work for you.

Identify your USP  for your marketing plan

Even if your business sits in a truly competitive market with lots of similar companies, there is still a good chance that you will have more of a USP than you realise. Knowing your USP and making it work for you is vital to creating any successful marketing plan.

This is because when you can say what makes you unique and why your clients should choose you over the other names, you are already one step closer to success.

Measure how you are doing

Finally, it is one thing to make your marketing plan, but you also need to think about how well you are doing in those plans. Put together measurable targets that you can look at during certain times and stages. If you can tick those off as you go, then you know that your marketing plan has done precisely what you wanted it to do.

As you can see, there are many things to think about when it comes to your marketing plan and how you can make it work for you. However, whilst it may take some time and effort, I can promise you that it is one of the most worthwhile things that you can do for your brand to make it a success.
