What Should Go Into a Sector or Service Line BD Plan?
Hello and welcome to my video series. Today I wanted to talk to you about what should go into a sector or service line BD plan.
If you’ve ever been asked to put together a BD plan for a sector or service line, you’ll know it can feel a bit… vague. Where do you even start?
Here’s how I usually approach it. Keep it simple, clear, and actually usable by the team.
First, get clear on the goal.
What are you actually trying to achieve? Maybe it’s winning five new clients, increasing revenue in a particular area, or raising your profile in a specific market.
Without a clear goal, the rest of the plan won’t have much direction.
Once you’ve got the goal, think about who you’re targeting.
Not just ‘clients in this sector’ but which job roles, what kind of organisations, what their challenges are.
The more specific you are, the more focused and effective your outreach will be.
Then ask yourself: why us?
This is about positioning. What makes your firm credible in this space? What experience, insights or results can you point to? If you’re trying to grow into a new area, this becomes even more important.
After that, think about activity.
What are you actually going to do to drive BD? That might be campaigns, events, networking, thought leadership or LinkedIn outreach.
The key here is to be realistic. It’s better to focus on a few things you’ll actually deliver than try to cover everything.
And finally, be really clear on who’s doing what.
This is the bit that often gets missed. A plan is only useful if someone owns it. So agree roles, responsibilities, and how you’ll check in on progress.
That’s it. It doesn’t have to be long or complicated, but it should give the team clarity and direction. If it helps drive conversations and follow-through, it’s doing its job.
