How to Create the Perfect ChatGPT Prompt
How to Create the Perfect ChatGPT Prompt
Hi everyone! Today, I’m going to talk about how to craft the perfect prompt for ChatGPT. I don’t know about you, but when I first started using ChatGPT, my prompts were pretty basic—just one-liners—and the results were, well, not great! So, I’ve spent some time figuring out what makes a good prompt and thought I’d share my top tips with you. Hopefully, this will help you get much better outcomes too.
Step 1: Give Your Chat a Character
When you start a new chat, the first thing you want to do is give ChatGPT a role or character to work from. For example, when I begin a chat, I’ll say, “You are a legal marketing consultant.” Then, I go on to explain the services I offer, such as marketing planning reviews or fractional marketing services. The goal is to provide as much context as possible so that ChatGPT can generate more tailored and relevant responses.
Step 2: Define Your Target Audience
Next, you want to tell ChatGPT about your target audience. For instance, my target audience is managing partners and business owners who are either struggling to find time for their marketing or have a junior team that needs guidance. By doing this, you help ChatGPT understand who you are speaking to, which is crucial for getting accurate and useful content.
Step 3: Outline Common Issues
Once you’ve defined your target audience, it’s helpful to list some common issues they might face. For example, I mention challenges like not having enough time, lacking resources, or having a junior marketing team that’s still learning the ropes. This helps build a clearer picture for ChatGPT, so it can provide more targeted and meaningful responses.
Step 4: Be Clear About What You Want
Now, this is the part where you tell ChatGPT exactly what you want it to do. It could be writing a video script, creating social media posts, or—like in this video—generating blog article ideas. The key here is to be specific. For example, if I want blog ideas, I’ll say, “I would like seven blog ideas.”
But here’s the thing—ChatGPT doesn’t inherently know what an “idea” is. So, I explain: “An idea is a title for a blog. I’d like a couple of bullet points explaining what the blog would be about and why it’s important.” This ensures that when ChatGPT generates the responses, I not only get a list of blog titles but also a little summary to help me take the next steps in writing the blog.
Step 5: Specify How You Want the Information Displayed
Lastly, it’s important to tell ChatGPT how you want the information to be displayed. Whether it’s in bullet points, a detailed paragraph, or even as questions, being clear about your format preferences can make a big difference in the output.
Recap
To summarise, here’s the process for crafting the perfect ChatGPT prompt:
- Give it a character – Define a role like “legal marketing consultant.”
- Describe your services – Help ChatGPT understand the context.
- Identify your target audience – Be clear on who you’re trying to reach.
- List common issues – Mention challenges your audience faces.
- Explain what you want – Be specific about the task (e.g., blog ideas).
- Clarify the format – Specify how you want the information presented.
